AL official warns of Israeli unilateral withdrawal

CAIRO, July 18 (Xinhuanet) -- An Arab League (AL) official on Monday warned of Israel's intention to carry out a unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip without coordinating with the Palestinians.

AL Assistant Secretary General for Palestinian Affairs Said Kamal made the remarks at the opening session of a conference of supervisors of Palestinian affairs in Arab countries.

Kamal said an Israeli unilateral withdrawal would mean that Israel did not want to commit itself to any measures or arrangements that would follow the withdrawal to activate the roadmap peace plan.

He also warned of the US procrastination regarding a political settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict while propagating the idea that Israel was making a painful concession by withdrawingfrom the Gaza Strip and evacuating its settlements.

"Only the US is capable of persuading or forcing Israel to implement its commitments, but it only makes remarks and cautions such as in the case of the settlement expansion," Kamal said.

The four-day conference is chaired by Zakareya Agha, a member ofthe Palestine Liberation Organization Executive Committee and head of the refugees' affairs department.

Delegations from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, the Palestinian territories, the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Arab League are taking part.

The conference will then refer its recommendations to the Arab foreign ministerial conference to be held early September. Enditem
