Madrid train bombings aim to end Aznar government
www.chinaview.cn 2005-07-17 09:26:45

MADRID, July 16 (Xinhuanet) -- The extremist Islamic group responsible for the Madrid train bombings on March 11, 2004, aimed to put an end to Jose Maria Aznar's conservative government, local police said Saturday.

The information was contained in a text found on the computer of Jamal Ahmidan, a suspect in the Madrid bombings, and was signed by the Abu Hafa al Masri Brigades of Al Qaeda.

The brigades, which claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks in London on July 7, also claimed responsibility for the Madrid train blasts in a message sent to the London newspaper Al Hayat hours after the attacks.

Jamal Ahmidan died together with other extremists who detonateda bomb in a suicide attack in Leganes in Madrid after being surrounded by police.

According to the text, dated March 15, 2004, "in Madrid's case, the time factor was very important in order to put an end to Aznar's ignoble government."

The Madrid bombings, which killed 192 people and injured 1,500 more, took place three days before the March 14, 2004 general elections which ousted Aznar's conservative government and gave a surprising victory to the Spanish Socialist Party led by Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

The brigades said the Madrid attacks, the bloodiest in the history of Spain, were code-named "Death Trains Operation."

Spain was considered an Al-Qaeda target because of Aznar's support for the US-led invasion of Iraq.

One of Zapatero's first decisions upon becoming prime minister was to order the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq, fulfilling his promise during the election campaign. Enditem
