Arroyo calls for battle through constitutional process
www.chinaview.cn 2005-07-13 21:18:19

MANILA, July 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Philippine president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Wednesday restated she will not give in to the"mob rule" of her oppositions, calling for battle through legal and constitutional processes.

Seeing the mass gathering of tens of thousand protesters in streets of Makati, Metro Manila, Arroyo said she is expecting the impeachment put forward by her oppositions, ignoring the crowds' call for her to resign.

Meanwhile, Arroyo cabinet members expressed their positions behind the president.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita and National Economic Development Authority General Manager Romulo Neri said the opposition should realize that these protest actions were hampering the normal course of business in the country.

National Security Council Adviser Norberto Gonzales also assailed Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay for organizing the rally in the central business district as businesses and workers there had to suffer because of clogged streets.

He said even the widow of the late presidential candidate Fernando Poe Jr., Susan Roces, whose presence in the rally was expected to encourage more people to join, would not espouse any trouble.

The cabinet members also warned the opposition not to take any violent means to press the president to step down.

"We are government of laws and not of men," Ermita stressed. "Everything (will be) fair and square in an impeachment court."

Ermita added the government had been ready, especially the security forces, to maintain peace and order.

"It is very irresponsible that these political bickerings affect business, that's wrong. Let us not destroy the economy andbusiness, because in the end, we will all end up losers," Neri said. Enditem
