BAGHDAD, July 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Farid Ayar, a member of Iraq's Higher Independent Committee for Elections, said on Tuesday that he is optimistic about holding of the referendum on the permanent constitution due on Oct. 15 and the following general elections slated for Dec. 15.

Some 14 million Iraqis are expected to participate in the upcoming referendum and the following general elections, Ayar told Xinhua.

"This is a piece of happy news and a new life for a Iraq and Iraqis," he added.

According to the election official, his committee had held meetings with election experts from the United Nations, which tackled the referendum process and the general elections.

"We have held six meetings focusing on what extent of support the United Nations should offer to Iraqis to bring success to the two ballots," he further explained.  Enditem
