MANILA, July 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The Philippine presidential palace said Saturday that
government services will not be disrupted by the resignations en masse of some
cabinet members and an impending revamp of government.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said at a press conference that all cabinet members
had submitted their courtesy resignations at the request of President
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, but all those who had not been replaced would
stay in office "in a holdover capacity."
"What happened can't really paralyze the government. The president has announced
a cabinet revamp before they resigned," he said, referring to
resignations en masse by 10 cabinet members Friday after Arroyo asked the entire
cabinet to make courtesy resignations before she sets up a new cabinet.
"The different organizations, the bureaucracy are in place, there are different
levels from secretary down to the undersecretary to the assistant secretary
so services would not be interrupted, government transactions would
continue," he said.
Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said Arroyo designated to fill some of the
vacated posts effective immediately were Mario Relampagos as Secretary of Budget
and Management, Roberto Tan as Secretary of Finance, Thomas Aquino as Secretary
of Trade and Industry, Ramon Bacani as Secretary of Education, Nasser
Pangandaman as Secretary of Land Reform, and Lualhati Pablo as Secretary of
Social Welfare and Development.
In a televised statement Friday evening, Arroyo announced that a new cabinet in the coming days, which she said would be made up of "individuals whose commitment to the nation and democratic principles" would be beyond doubt. Enditem |
