Taliban claims to have killed US soldier

ISLAMABAD, July 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Taliban spokesman Latifullah Hakimi Saturday said that Taliban had extracted useful information from the US soldier who had been held hostage since last week before he was slaughtered.

"We had extracted very useful information as he was an important person. He gave us details about the American military strategy, their bases and future military plans," Hakimi said from an undisclosed location by satellite phone.

"Our Mujahideen (holy fighters) slaughtered the US soldier at 11 am local time in Shegal area of Kunar province," Hakimi said. Shegal is one of the central areas in Kunar.

Asked if the US soldier was tried in court as Taliban had been doing in the cases of Afghan soldiers and officials, Hakimi said there was no need to try the US soldiers as they did not need trial.

"US soldiers do not need trail as ulema have already issued fatwa (ruling) that they deserve to be killed for their occupation of an Islamic country and killing innocent Muslims in several countries including Afghanistan," the Taliban spokesman said.

Asked if they would hand over the dead body to the American authorities, Hakimi said the body was lying in the mountain of Shegal area.

"The dead body is in mountains and the American troops can easily find his body," Hakimi said.

However, the killing of the US soldier was not confirmed by the US military. "I don't have any information on that," US military spokeswoman Lieutenant Cindy Moore said in Kabul.

Four US soldiers vanished last week in eastern Afghanistan after a helicopter, which was sent in to rescue them, was shot down killing all 16 on board.

The US military said two of its missing commanders were found dead Monday, one was rescued and one was missing. Enditem
