MOSCOW, July 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday
called on the United Nations to redouble its efforts to fight terrorism in the
wake of the bombings in London on Thursday.
"It is necessary to ensure that those assisting terrorists should fail to
find refuge wherever they go," the Interfax news agency quoted Lavrov of telling
a press briefing,.
Lavrov said Russia knows that "the struggle against terrorism must rest on
the same standards, which exclude the use of different forms of terrorism in the
political game,"
"The members of the UN Security Council should double, triple their efforts
to lead the international community in the anti-terrorism struggle," Lavrov
said, calling for an intensification of practical action, particularly close
cooperation among special services to prevent terrorists from staging acts of
terror.
Lavrov was not alone among Russian officials in speaking out against double standards
in fighting terrorism. President Vladimir Putin, who is in Scotland for
the summit of the Group of Eight (G-8), made similar calls while commenting on
the deadly bombings in London.
"I would nevertheless like to express not only hope, but also confidence, that
the world community, discarding double standards in assessing bloody crimes like
the one committed in London today, will have enough strength to stand firm
against terror," Putin said on Thursday.
Four blasts ripped through three subway trains and a double-decker bus in
central London on Thursday, killing more than 50 people and injuring about 700
during the morning rush hour.
Some officials have put the blasts in the ranks of the Sept. 11,2001 terrorist
attacks in the United States and linked them to the war terrorists
waged on the entire world.
"The blasts in London is a barbaric and awful terrorist act that is similar
to the blasts of apartment blocks in Russia, the September 11, 2001 events in
the United States. This is links of one chain and episodes of one war that
terrorists declared on the entire world," said Nikolai Borduzha, Secretary
General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization.
"The London events confirm that all of us should unite in the fight against
new challenges and threats," he added. Enditem |
