MANILA, July 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Some members of the cabinet of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Friday urged Arroyo to resign for the sake of the nation.

At a press conference after Arroyo asked the whole cabinet to resign Thursday night, some cabinet members led by Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said Friday it is no longer good for Arroyo to rule the country any more.

He asked Arroyo to voluntarily relinquish power and handed it to Vice President Noli de Castro.

The cabinet members who attended the news conference also included Budget Secretary Emilia Boncodin, Trade Secretary Juan Santos and the heads of the main tax and customs agencies, which made up the economic team of Arroyo.

In a televised speech Thursday, Arroyo asked her whole cabinet to resign to pave the way for a fundamental shake-up of the government. Enditem
