Poll: 55% Palestinians support ceasefire

    GAZA, July 6 (Xinhuanet) -- An opinion poll showed on Wednesday that more than half of the Palestinians remain supportive for a fragile ceasefire with Israel.

    The poll said that 54.6 percent of those surveyed said that theysupport the calmness or cease-fire that was agreed upon between Israeli and the Palestinian leaders in February at a summit in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh.

    It added that 38 percent said that they are against a ceasefire with Israel, while 7.4 percent didn't say whether they in favor or against.

    The poll, conducted by the State Information Service (SIS) of the Palestinian Authority, said that 703 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip were asked the question "Do you support the calmness with Israel?" It added that 267 supported the calmness, 234 rejected it, and 52 refused to answer.

    The supporters of the ceasefire said that the conflict should bebrought to an end in order to achieve just and comprehensive peace.

     The opponents to the ceasefire, meanwhile, said that they rejectit "because they don't trust the Israelis," adding that "although attacks on Israel were halted, the Israeli side continued with its military actions against them." Enditem
