PARIS, July 5 (Xinhuanet) -- More than 10,000 people have been evacuated from six camping grounds on the French Riviera as an intense forest fire driven by high winds advanced on their tents and caravans, emergency services said Tuesday.
The fire broke out at the start of the European summer vacation period in three different locations around the village of Puget sur Argens, near the chic coastal town of Saint Raphael, attracting millions of foreigner tourists, according to emergency services.
More than 400 firefighters, backed by dozens of vehicles and 11aircraft, were fighting the flames.
The regional government office said 650 hectares had been scorched by the fire, which cut electricity to 4000 homes in Frejus and hurt two firemen. Enditem |
