Pakistan asks ambassador move to Jordan after Baghdad attack
www.chinaview.cn 2005-07-05 23:16:21

ISLAMABAD, July 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Pakistan Tuesday asked its ambassador to Iraq to immediately move to Jordan after he narrowlye scaped an attack in Baghdad.

Earlier on Tuesday, some gunmen in the Iraqi capital opened fire on a convoy of vehicles carrying Pakistani ambassador Younas Khan.

"The decision has been taken and the ambassador has been informed. He will take the administrative measures and he will be immediately relocated to Amman, Jordan," Naeem Khan, Foreign Office director general in charge of Asian affairs, told the Pakistan TV in an interview.

Giving details of the attack, Naeem said that the ambassador was returning to his residence from office Tuesday afternoon when some unknown assailants attacked him. He was fired upon but luckily escaped unhurt.

Naeem said that the ambassador's car was damaged by bullets.

Reports suggested that the gunmen in two cars approached the convoy carrying the Pakistani diplomat and opened fire. They hit the vehicle used by his security guards, who returned fire, and the gunmen fled. No one was hurt.

Before the attack on Tuesday, there was an attempt to kidnap a top diplomat from Bahrain as he left his home to work in the affluent district of Mansur, Baghdad.

He was shot in the arm after speeding off in his car to escape. His injuries were not life-threatening and is expected to return to Bahrain soon. Enditem
