Indian minister says Ayodhya attack security lapse

NEW DELHI, July 5 (Xinhuanet)-- The central government Tuesday termed the terrorist attack on the Bari-Masjid-Ram Janambhumi premises in Uttar Pradesh (UP)'s Ayodhya town a security lapse, and said that it has instructed the UP Government to probe the incident in-depth.

Talking to Xinhua, Indian Minister of State for Home Affairs Sri Prakash Jaiswal said Tuesday, "It is certainly a security lapse on the part of the UP Government. I have asked Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to probe the incident and punish the guilty."

Jaiswal also expressed hope that the central government will get the report on the attack from the UP Government by the evening.

The Indian Minister said that the security in and around the temple town and other sensitive places have been put on high alert as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, principal opposition party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has called for a nation-wide protest on Wednesday against Tuesday's terrorist attack.

The movement for the construction of a Ram Temple at Ayodhya was started by the BJP in the late 1980s, and many of its leaders are accused of demolishing the Babri Masjid, which stood at the disputed site before December 6, 1992.

A section India's Hindu society claims Ayodhya as the birth place of lord Ram, and accuses Mughal ruler Babar of constructing a mosque after breaking a Ram temple in the 16th century.

At present, litigation is going on between the two communities in India's apex court, taking the ownership of the disputed site. Enditem
