Montenegro denies alleged hiding of top war crimes suspect

BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro, July 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Montenegro on Sunday denied the allegations that the most wanted war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic, a former Bosnian Serb political leader, is hiding in Montenegro, said reports reaching here from Podgorica.

"Allegations by Britain's BBC, quoting a reliable intelligence source, are absolutely wrong and arbitrary," Montenegro's National Security Agency was quoted by the official Tanjug news agency as saying.

Karadzic is wanted by The Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which has indicted him for atrocities in the 1992-1995 Bosnian civil war.

Quoting international security agencies, BBC alleged that Karadzic is believed to be in a remote part of north-west Montenegro, near the town of Niksic, where he grew up.

Several days ago, Montenegro's police searched the house of Radovan's brother Luka Karadzic in Niksic, and took away with thema computer and several diskettes.

Last month, Montenegro's newspapers revealed that the British Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6, is tracking down crucial ICTY indictees, including Radovan Karadzic. The British operation aims to locate and arrest Karadzic by July 11, the day when 10-year anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre will be marked. Enditem
