GAZA, July 3 (Xinhuanet) -- Palestinian Civil Minister Mohammed Dahlan said on Sunday that the Palestinian control of crossings will ensure the success of an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
Dahlan told reporters that the Palestinian control of passages and crossings is the key for the success.
He said he does not think that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon wants to make compromise in implementing his disengagement plan, adding Israel wants to keep control of free flow of Palestinian people and goods.
"Israel does not want to let the Palestinian National Authority have its full control of all passages and terminals," said Dahlan, adding such an Israeli move will affect peace prospects.
Meanwhile, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said on Sunday that the Palestinians should seriously deal with Sharon's remarks about intensifying settlements in the West Bank.
Sharon has claimed that the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip isaimed at intensifying settlement activities in the West Bank.
"Sharon wants to replace the roadmap peace plan with the disengagement plan," Erekat told the Voice of Palestine.
The international quartet, grouping the United Nations, Russia, the United States and the European Union, envisions a full Palestinian state by 2005.
Under Sharon's disengagement plan, Israel is expected to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and part of northern West Bank in mid-August. Enditem |
