NEW DELHI, July 1 (Xinhuanet) -- At least 56 people have died in the incessant downpour
in Gujarat Pradesh along India's west coast since the monsoon started
late June, Indo-Asian News Service reported Friday.
More than 120,000 people have been affected by the rains since Saturday,
local government said. But it did not release the detailed cause of the 56
death.
The national highway was cut off as three districts in central Gujarat and
four in the south were submerged under water while soldiers were sent to shift
people from low-lying areas.
A major river at Vadodara of central Gujarat was flowing above the danger
mark after two local reservoirs overflowed, leaving most parts of the city
marooned.
Rain has also disturbed rail traffic between India's business hub Mumbai
and the Pradesh capital Ahmedabad and Indian capital Delhi for the fourth day.
The railway authority cleared the railway track on a war footing.
The National Highway No. 8, linking Ahmedabad and Mumbai, was blocked with
sections flooded.
In Ahmedabad that received heavy rains overnight, flights were delayed
Friday morning, airports sources said.
The southwest monsoon has covered most parts of Gujarat and the thirsty regions in north Gujarat have received heavy rains. Enditem |
