Philippine vice president not to oppose impeachment of Arroyo
www.chinaview.cn 2005-06-29 19:22:36

MANILA, June 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Philippine Vice President Noli De Castro said Wednesday it is the Philippine Congress which can onlydecide the future of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who is being tormented by two scandals of alleged fraud in last year's presidential election and alleged involvement of her family in illegal gambling business.

De Castro's spokesman, Attorney Jesse Andre, said at a press conference that De Castro wants truth be revealed about the scandals and justice be done, but opposes any violence or anarchy.

This is the first time De Castro publicly announced his distance from Arroyo after the latter admitted that she did call an election commissioner during last year's presidential election.

"Naturally he respects the admission (by Arroyo), but it doesn't end here. There are different interpretations. There is no process now. Only one body could decide, which is Congress," saidAndre.

There are legal processes which should be followed, including the filing of an impeachment complaint against Arroyo at the Congress over alleged election fraud, said the spokesman.

He also said that although De Castro will not initiate an impeachment process by himself, he will not oppose it.

According to the Philippine Constitution, if a president resigns, the vice president will take over the presidency. Enditem
