BEIRUT, June 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Celebratory gunshots fired by supporters of
re-elected Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri have killed three people and
wounded seven others overnight, security sources said Wednesday.
Police have arrested several suspects and are hunting for a number of
others over the shootings, said the sources.
Berri, the pro-Syrian politician and the leader of the Amal Movement, was
re-elected with a majority of 90 votes as speaker for a four-year term on
Tuesday when the new 128-seat Lebanese parliament gathered for its first session
since the elections completed on June 19.
Berri's supporters fired shots into the air to celebrate his reelection in
various areas of Lebanon overnight.
Berri has held the position since 1992, which is the highest open to a
Shiite Muslim under Lebanon's sectarian system.
Lebanon's sectarian system divides top government posts among its main
religious communities. The country's president is always a Maronite Christian,
the prime minister is a Sunni Muslim and the parliament speaker a Shiite.
