BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhuanet)-- The foundation laying ceremony was held Thursday for a new primary school in northeast China's Shalan Township, where raging mountain torrents killed 117 lives, including 105 pupils, on June 10.
The new school will be built with 1 million yuan (120,480 US dollars) worth of donation rendered by all walks of life in China.
The red cross society of the Macao Special Administrative Regions provided 500,000 yuan (61,000 US dollars), believed the large sum of donation.
The Chinese Red Cross Foundation (CRCF), the organizer of the move, has raised relief goods worth more than 100,000 yuan (12,200 US dollars), including schoolbags, stationery, electronic organs and etc., which will later be handed over to teachers and pupils of the primary school, a CRCF official said.
The Shalan Township in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, was hit by a rare mountain torrent on June 10, inundating a low-lying primary school where 352 pupils and 31 teaching staff were in class.
The surviving pupils resumed class last week at a middle school, which is about two kilometers away from the former school site.
A local official estimated the cost of the new school at 7 million yuan (854,000 US dollars). It comprises a three-storey teaching building, a dormitory and canteen. Enditem |
