¡¡ATHENS, June 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Around 21 percent of Greek households
is facing the risk of poverty, a survey by the National Statistics Service said
The survey, conducted on a sample of 14,960 members of Greek households for the year 2003, showed that 21 percent of Greeks faced the danger of
poverty, up from 20 percent in 2002. Excludingsocial transfers, the rate rose to
22.3 percent, NSS said in the report.

Around half Greek households (46 percent) reported being unableto handle
emergency and necessary spending, while 52 percent said they could not afford
one week of vacation during the summer.
One in five households (19 percent) said it could not fully cover the cost
of heating, while 37 percent reported financial difficulty in paying their fixed
monthly expenses (house rent, telephone cost and electricity bills). Enditem
