Katie Holmes at Paris' famed Eiffel Tower on Friday, ending weeks of
speculation over whether Hollywood's hottest couple would wed.
Appearing with Holmes at a Paris news conference, the
Hollywood star said, "Yes I
proposed to Kate last night ... because it is very beautiful and romantic here."
"Today is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman," he
added.
He put off answering other questions about the wedding plans, saying they
were up to Holmes' father to decide.
For the date of the wedding, Cruise said he was taking it "one step at a
time but we'll decide it soon."
The two were on publicity tours in Paris to promote their respective
films.
Holmes stars in "Batman Begins", which opened worldwide this week, while
Cruise's "War of the Worlds" is set to hit theatres over the next two weeks.
The 42-year-old actor has been married twice before, to Mimi Rogers and
later to Nicole Kidman, with whom he adopted two children. His 10-year marriage
to Nicole Kidman broke up in 2001.
Cruise was previously hooked up with Spanish actress Penelope Cruz for
three years, but that relationship ended in January.
Cruise has been nominated for two best actor Academy Awards, in "Born on
the Fourth of July" and "Jerry Maguire," and one best supporting actor Oscar in
"Magnolia." Enditem
