MEXICO CITY, June 16 (Xinhuanet) -- A mudslide killed 20 people and left many others missing in north Guatemala, the local press said Thursday.
The mudslide, which also left dozens of people injured, hit on Wednesday evening in San Antonio Senahu municipality, according to reports from Guatemala City.
The supply of potable water, electricity and telephone service in some areas of San Antonio Senahu were cut off by the mudslide, caused by heavy rains, said a spokesperson of the National Disaster Management Coordination of Guatemala.
Rescuers tried Thursday to remove the debris to retrieve bodiestrapped under the mud. The death toll may rise as more bodies were being recovered, said the authorities.
In June 2000, a mudslide in El Calvario killed 15 people. Enditem |
