Blair to fend off attacks on Britain's rebate at EU summit

LONDON, June 16 (Xinhuanet) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair is heading for the European Council's summit in Brussels to fending off attacks on Britain's rebate, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported on Thursday.

There is little chance of a deal on the European Union's finances, and he will not discuss the Britain's 3 billion pounds (5.24 billion US dollars) annual refund unless farm subsidies are axed, Blair was quoted by the BBC as saying.

Changes to how the EU spends its money must be part of efforts to reconnect the public with the union, he said.

But Blair expected there will be a deal on suspending attempts to ratify the EU constitution following the "No" votes in France and the Netherlands, saying there now needs to be "a pause for reflection".

The EU summit, to be held on June 16-17, will largely be devoted to the crisis surrounding the proposed European constitution and EU finances. Enditem
