FMs of G77 discuss action plan ahead of summit

DOHA, June 13 (Xinhuanet) -- Foreign ministers of the Group of 77 (G77) discussed Monday a draft Program of Action to cope with an increasingly globalized world economy ahead of a summit of G77 plusChina due to kick off on Wednesday.

The program, to be presented for approval at the coming summit, renews commitment of the G77 and China to the Havana Declaration adopted by the first G77 plus China summit held in Havana, Cuba in April, 2000.

Reviewing the implementation of the Havana Declaration which sets out a vision and broad strategy for the future South-South cooperation and the achievements of the G77 during the past few years, the plan also lists the challenges the bloc faces nowadays.

The action-oriented program calls for enhanced cooperation amongthe member states and meanwhile advocates the members adopting appropriate measures and policies suitable to their own national interests and priorities to achieve development.

The program also acknowledges that total reliance on the market mechanism is insufficient to meet the challenges of development in the world heading toward greater globalization.

The coming Doha summit, the second of its king, will gather leaders from the G77 and China, exploring ways to strengthen South-South cooperation. The North-South ties and UN reforms are also to be discussed.

The G77, founded in 1964, now groups 133 developing countries. Enditem
