Roche Sponsors the World's Longest 'Chinese Whisper' Disease
Awareness Chain to Raise Awareness of the Global Impact
                      of Lymphatic Cancer (Lymphoma)

746 people from around the world made history today by uniting to
break the Guinness World Record for the largest "Chinese whisper"
chain -- a record that previously stood at 718 people. With the aim
of raising awareness of "lymphoma", a potentially deadly cancer of
the blood, participants from 59 countries stood side-by-side to pass
the message that "there is new hope for lymphoma patients". The world
record attempt coincided with the 9th International Conference of
Malignant Lymphoma (ICML) being held this week in Lugano, Switzerland.

Lymphoma is a serious cancer of the blood, which can be fatal
within six months if left untreated -- as such, awareness of the
disease and its symptoms remains vital. More than 360,000(1) people
globally are diagnosed with lymphoma each year and a new case
diagnosed every nine minutes. Nevertheless, public awareness of this
disease is low, its symptoms difficult to identify and often mistaken
for less serious conditions such as flu or general fatigue. However,
with the emergence of monoclonal antibodies over the past five years,
there have been significant advances in lymphoma treatment, which
have enabled increased numbers of patients to remain symptom-free or
even be cured.
Adam Morris, an ex-professional footballer and non-Hodgkin's
lymphoma survivor who participated in the event, said, "I am
privileged to have been part of this historical event. I hope my
contribution and that of the other participants raises awareness of
this disease and provides new hope for the management of lymphoma. If,
as a result of this event, we help reach the hundreds of thousands
of lymphoma patients to let them know that there are treatments that
really work, we will have achieved our goal."
Professor Franco Cavalli, Director of the Oncology Institute of
Southern Switzerland and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of ICML,
started the disease awareness chain. He commented, "Successfully
breaking the world record was a great achievement. Everyone who
attends the ICML has a strong interest in lymphoma and it is clear
from today's event that there is a real commitment to improving the
lives of people with lymphoma through the sharing of knowledge. By
demonstrating that there is hope for patients with lymphoma through
accurate diagnosis and treatment, we hope that this event will make a
real difference".
The organizers and participants hope that by breaking this
Guinness World Record, people around the world will have an increased
awareness of the symptoms of lymphoma, leading to correct diagnosis,
appropriate treatment and the rebuilding of lives.
