www.chinaview.cn 2005-06-09 14:08:03

BEIJING, June 9 -- The Ministry of Culture will join with the Beijing Academy of Painting and Calligraphy to establish the Qi Baishi College of Fine Arts in Beijing.

The announcement was made during the Beijing-Guangdong cultural Exchange of Painting and Calligraphy, held recently in Guangzhou, the birthplace of Qi Baishi (1864-1957). Renowned for his great skill in painting, calligraphy, carpentry and poetry, Qi is regarded as one the country's great contemporary artists.

The newly launched college, with an investment of more than 120 million yuan (US$14.5 million), aims to better promote Qi's art to the wider public.

The college will enroll students from both home and abroad.
