LIMA, June 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Spanish company Repsol-YPF in Bolivia had stopped
operation after local farmers, calling for the nationalization of the country's
huge energy reserves, occupied its oil fields, said the firm on Wednesday.
The three fields, 150 km north of the eastern Santa Cruz city, which
jointly produces 2,600 to 3,000 barrels of crude oil per day,has been occupied
by local farmers since Tuesday, said Miguel Cirbian, public relations official
of Andina, the Bolivian branch of Repsol.
According to him, the occupation was peaceful and the company'spersonnel
has refrained from confrontation with the farmers.
"The government has been informed of this situation" and the Energy
Ministry and Bolivian State-run firm YPFB will take care ofthe issue, he said.
In other developments, oil fields operated by British Petroleumin the same
region have also been blockaded since Friday.
Impoverished Indian majority of the country staged demonstrations several
weeks ago calling for the nationalization of Bolivia's energy reserves and a
special assembly to grant them more power.
In efforts to end the crisis gripping the Andean nation, President Carlos Mesa
offered to resign on Monday and urged early elections. A congressional session
