CAIRO, June 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Bodies of another four victims were found Wednesday at the site of a building collapse in Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria, bringing the death toll in the accident to 12 so far, police said.
Police confirmed earlier in the day that at least 17 others were injured in a six-story building which collapsed on Tuesday.
Up to 10 people may still be trapped under piles of concrete and metal in the ruined block, which fell onto the wall of a school, where at least 20 women were to collect students who were finishing exams, according to the police.
One police source said the building was originally three storeys high, but the owner had illegally added three extra floors, whichhe said caused the incident.
Collapse of apartment blocks is common in Egypt, where building regulations are sometimes ignored and residents often add unauthorized floors to existing structures.
Last year, five people from one family were killed in another building collapse in Alexandria and a five-storey building fell ina residential area of the southern city of Aswan, killing 14 people. Enditem |
