US insists Hezbollah must disarm

WASHINGTON, June 6 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States maintains that Hezbollah as a terrorist group must disarm if it is to become a political player despite its electoral successes in Lebanon, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Monday.

The US focus in the Lebanese elections has been to make sure they are free and fair with no outside intimidation or interference, McClellan told reporters aboard Air Force One as President George W. Bush flew to Florida.

"These elections are ongoing and in terms of Hezbollah, I thinkour views are well known and they remain unchanged. You have a Security Council resolution that calls for the disarming of groups like Hezbollah and that remains our view. Hezbollah, as you are well aware, is a terrorist organization.

"Our views on terrorist organizations are unchanged. We've made those views very clear, and our belief that terrorist organizations need to be dismantled," McClellan said.

The spokesman made the remarks when he was responding to a strong showing by Hezbollah in Lebanese parliamentary elections.

Hezbollah and its allies swept south Lebanon's parliamentary elections by a landslide, the Lebanese Interior Ministry said Monday. The next round of voting will be on Sunday in Mount Lebanon, the traditional Maronite Christian heartland.

Hezbollah, labeled a terrorist group by the US, is under international pressure to disarm. The guerilla group has so far refused to bow to the pressure, including a UN resolution demanding militias in Lebanon give up their weapons. Enditem
