JERUSALEM, June 6 (Xinhuanet) -- All Israeli reserve combat units will be enlisted for the summer pullout from the Gaza Strip and part of northern West Bank, the Jerusalem Post reported on Monday.
A senior officer was quoted as saying that reservists have been mobilized and they will be trained to carry out daily duties of the army's regular service soldiers, who will actually be tasked with evacuating settlers.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz asked settlers slated for evacuation to voluntarily move their children elsewhere before the implementation of the pullout in order not to expose them to unnecessary harm.
Mofaz said the army will collect weapons from settlers before Aug. 15 when the evacuation starts.
"The weapon is the army's property, so it will be taken forcefully from anyone refusing to hand it over," Mofaz said.
Israel plans to evacuate from all 21 settlements in the Gaza Strip and four out of 120 in northern West Bank to disengage from violence with the Palestinians, who want the West Bank and the Gaza Strip for a viable state.
Some Jewish extremists have threatened to disrupt the evacuation from the territories they deem as their biblical birthplace. Enditem |
