MANILA, June 5 (Xinhuanet) -- The US embassy in
Manila Sunday denied tapping a conversation last year between Philippine
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and some military generals, who reportedly
discussed a strategy on how to cheat late opposition standard-bearer Ferdinand
Poe Jr. in the May 2004 elections.
US embassy spokeswoman Karen Kelley said the embassy
did not engage in such activity as some reports have suggested.
"I don't know how we have been wrapped up on this. We
have not recorded any conversation. We are not involved," Kelley told the local
media.
She said that the US embassy does not interfere in
the internal and political affairs of the Philippines.
While she admitted that the embassy is aware of the
report, shesaid they dismissed it as mere "rumors".
"I heard about it last night. Some people are
claiming that they got it from a US embassy source, but we are not involved in
this act at all. We don't have a role on this," she said.
The presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said on
Sunday that the government has discovered a new plot by the opposition to
oustArroyo from power by publishing a tape of conversation of the president last
year allegedly tappd by a US intelligence agent. The Philippine opposition
claimed that Poe was defeated in last year's election because of massive fraud
in vote counting organized by the Arroyo camp. Enditem |
