MANILA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine military Sunday expressed concern
over intelligence reports that there are continuing efforts by some members of
the opposition to destabilize the administration of President Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public information office chief
Buenaventura Pascual said in a press release that "certain sectors" are using
"all means fair and foul to discredit the political leadership, to incite
members of the uniformed services to engage in mutinous acts, and encourage the
people to withdraw their allegiance from the duly constituted government".
"In the face of these reports, I wish to affirm the unconditional loyalty
of the AFP to the Commander-in-Chief (Arroyo), to the flag and to the
constitution, with a warning that we shall resist without hesitation all
clandestine efforts to undermine the unity within the AFP and break the chain of
command,or any seditious act that will threaten the existence of the Republic
and the AFP as an institution," said Pascual.
He also said that the military itself has also recently been "maligned and
become the object of several critical issues and disinformation".
"Clearly, there are unseen hands trying to drive a wedge between the
officers and enlisted personnel, create a picture of disunity, and alienate the
AFP from the Filipino people," he said.
He was apparently referring to criticism by some media reports of a plan to
build an AFP holiday center in the resort island of Boracay and a plan to
renovate a sidewalk outside the Camp Aquinaldo, the headquarters of the AFP in
Quezon City, Metro Manila.
Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said on Sunday that the government has
uncovered a new plot to oust President Arroyo by some opposition members who are
trying to link the president with alleged voting irregularities in the 2004
elections.
The president has come under attack recently for the allegedly involvement
of her family members in the illegal jueteng gambling business. Enditem
