Trans-Atlantic flight diverted over hijacking alert

    WASHINGTON, June 3 (Xinhuanet) -- A Virgin Atlantic airplane boundfor New York from London on Friday was being diverted to Canada due to a hijacking alert, authorities said Friday.

    Katie Montgomery, a spokeswoman for the Homeland Security Department, said Virgin Airlines Flight 45 was en route from London to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York when the plane began emitting a signal indicating a possible hijacking.

    The pilot indicated later that no hijacking happened, she said.

    Canadian fighter jets intercepted the airliner over the Atlantic, and the plane was to land in Canada. Enditem
