BERLIN, June 2 (Xinhuanet) -- German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and French President Jacques Chirac would hold an emergency meeting to discuss the European Union (EU) constitutional crisis in Berlin on Saturday, local media reported Thursday.
The two leaders would discuss how the EU should deal
with the crisis after the EU constitution was rejected in French and Dutch
referendums, a German official said.
On Thursday, Chirac's spokesman also confirmed that
Chirac would visit Berlin on Saturday to discuss the integration process as well
as the future of the EU with Schroeder.
The French and Dutch rejections of the EU
constitution have plunged the bloc into predicament. Leaders of EU member states
began diplomatic activities swiftly to seek a way out of the constitutional
crisis.
Schroeder, whose country has approved the EU
constitution, on Thursday visited Luxembourg, which is holding the rotating
presidency of the EU, to discuss the crisis with his counterpart. He was
scheduled to met with British Prime Minster Tony Blair in Berlin on June 13.
The EU leaders would hold a summit in Brussels to
discuss EU issues on June 16-17. Enditem |
