France announces new center-right government

France announced on Thursday the member list of the new government of French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who replaced Jean-Pierre Raffarin.

    PARIS, June 2 (Xinhuanet) -- France announced on Thursday the member list of the new government of French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who replaced Jean-Pierre Raffarin.

    Villepin was named Tuesday by President Jacques Chirac after the French voters rejected the European Union (EU) constitutional treaty at Sunday referendum.

    Nicolas Sarkozy, president of Chirac's ruling party Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) was named interior minister, number two in the cabinet and minister of state.

    Philippe Douste-Blazy, health minister in the outgoing government, was named foreign minister to replace Michel Barnier.

    Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, Social Affairs Minister Jean-Louis Borloo and Finance Minister Thierry Breton remained in their posts.    Enditem
