www.chinaview.cn 2005-06-02 14:06:53

BEIJING, June 2 -- China has announced it will vote against the proposed enlargement of the UN Security Council in this month's General Assembly vote.

The expansion is proposed by Germany, Japan, India, and Brazil, the so-called G4.

;   After a closed-door meeting Wednesday with other opposing countries, China's UN Ambassador Wang Guangya said UN members are divided on the resolution and that China will oppose it.

The ambassador said he hopes the negotiations will continue, to come up with an expansion plan that's acceptable to UN members.

In an interview with the Associated Press Tuesday, Wang Guangya called the resolution "dangerous" and said China would use its veto as a Security Council member to block it.

The "Uniting for Consensus" group which opposes expanding the Security Council comprises Italy, Spain, Mexico, Algeria, Pakistan, and Canada.

The G-4 countries circulated a resolution on May 16 to give them permanent seats on the Security Council with veto rights.

They vote is scheduled to be put to the General Assembly this month It needs a two-thirds majority to be implemented.
