WASHINGTON, May 31 (Xinhuanet) -- US President George W. Bush on Tuesday urged the Senate to vote and confirm John Bolton whom he nominated to be the next US ambassador to the United Nations.
"I thought John Bolton was going to get an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor, just like he deserves an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor," Bush said at a White House press conference.
"Clearly, he's got the votes to get confirmed. And so I was disappointed that once again, the leadership there in the Senate didn't give him an up-or-down vote," Bush said.
"And the reason it's important to have an up-or-down vote is because we need to get our ambassador to the United Nations to help start reforming that important organization ... we need to get something done in the United Nations," Bush said.
In another setback for Bush, the Democrats on Thursday forced adelay in the confirmation vote of John Bolton to become the next US ambassador to the United Nations.
By a vote of 42 to 56, the Democrats in the Senate managed to get enough support for a procedural maneuver to prolong the debateon Bolton's nomination, while the Republicans were just four votesshort of the 60 necessary to bring Bolton's nomination to a final vote.
Thursday's move put off the Bolton confirmation vote until at least June 7, when the Senate returns from the Memorial Day break.Enditem
