Russian, US FMs hold telephone talks on Iraq

MOSCOW, May 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US State Secretary Condoleezza Rice Saturday held telephone talks discussing various issues, including the forthcoming international conference on Iraq, the Russian-American cooperation against terrorism, and Iran's nuclear issues, the Itar-Tass news agency reported on Sunday.

Lavrov and Rice "discussed preparations for a conference on Iraq to be held in late June, and individual aspects of the Russian-American cooperation on fighting terrorism," the Russian foreign ministry stated in a press release.

The two foreign ministers also exchanged opinions on the results of the recent review conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which ended in New York last week.

Both Lavrov and Rice "expressed satisfaction with an understanding reached at the recent meeting between the foreign ministers of the three of the European Union and secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council Hassan Rowhani, on continuing talks on the Iranian nuclear program", the report quoted the ministry statement as saying.

Iran has suspended its uranium enrichment activities since last November under huge international pressure led by the United States, which accuses Tehran of trying to make nuclear weapons.

Russia, standing for the EU efforts to convince Tehran to abandon its enrichment activities, is building a nuclear power plant in Iran as a form of compensation despite US opposition. Enditem
