BUENOS AIRES, May 26 (Xinhuanet) -- The Argentine government reinforced its security forces along the border with Bolivia to prevent massive inflow of Bolivian refugees and prepares to rescue Argentines in Bolivia, the local press said Thursday.
The Argentine government said in a statement Thursday that the situation in La Paz, the administrative capital of Bolivia, is unstable and tends to get worse and the government is closely watching the situation in Bolivia.
Government officials said that five C-130 Hercules cargo planeswere ready to take off to Bolivia and bring Argentine residents back to the country.
Reports said the Argentine Embassy in Bolivia had tightened itssecurity with a police contingent urgently sent from Argentina.
Protesters tried to blockade the central square of La Paz on Tuesday and demanded step-down of President Carlos Mesa. Reports said at least six people were injured during clashes between police and the demonstrators.
On Wednesday, two Bolivian military officers demanded the resignation of Mesa and offered to head a transition government. Enditem |
