JAKARTA, May 26 (Xinhuanet) -- Terrorists in Indonesia have been preparing to carry out attacks in the world's largest Muslim country in order to disturb security, police chief said here Thursday.

Police Chief General Da'i Bachtiar said that the police intelligence has found indication that the group of Azhari, who isthe most wanted Malaysian bomb expert, has been planning to conduct terror attacks. But he said he was not certain whether the plan would be implemented soon and which target had been chosen.

"Intelligence analysis indicates that there is preparation for conducting other attacks...But it is not sure yet whether the attack will be conducted soon and the choice of targets...They arefrom group of Azhari...So we anticipate," said Bachtiar.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector General Firman Gani was quoted by the state-owned Antara News Agency as saying Thursday that the plan has potentially threatened the security of the city.

He has sent messages to the foreign embassies in Jakarta, including those of the United States, Britain, Australia and Japan, and beefed up security for the embassies and other foreign facilities.

The Jakarta police have detected an escalation of terrorists' activity, he added.

Regarding to Thursday's closure of the US diplomatic mission offices in Indonesia, he said the closure is not out of travel warning, but based on police information of security threats.

A number of terrorist suspects, who were allegedly involved in series of terror attacks in Indonesia like the Bali bombings in 2002, the JW Marriot Hotel explosion in 2003 and the explosion near the Australian Embassy in 2004, are still at large and believed to own a huge amount of explosive materials.
