Britain pursues constitution referendum
www.chinaview.cn 2005-05-25 03:05:58

LONDON, May 24 (Xinhuanet) -- British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said on Tuesday that Britain will push forward a referendum on the European Union (EU) constitution.

Straw introduced the European Union Bill in the House of Commons, saying "we are publishing the EU Constitution Bill today as an indication of our confidence in the constitution and our determination to get this through a referendum."

"This important Bill provides for a referendum to be held on the EU Constitutional Treaty and for the Treaty to be given effectin UK law if approved by the referendum," Straw said.

"I firmly believe that this Treaty is good for the UK and good for Europe. It creates a framework for a European Union of nation states which is more efficient, more effective and more democratic," Straw said.

"I look forward to debating the facts of this Treaty in the House, dispelling the many myths around it and setting out for the British public the clear case for voting Yes," Straw added.

According to the Foreign Office, the Bill will come up for debate and approval in the Commons in June. Enditem
