Indian president starts Russia visit

Indian President Abdul Kalam arrived in Moscow on Monday, starting the first state visit by an Indian president since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

    BEIJING, May 23 -- Indian President Abdul Kalam arrived in Moscow on Monday, starting the first state visit by an Indian president since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

    The three-day visit is due to include talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials. The talks wiil focus primarily on on-going weapons projects. They will also include discussions on the state of Indian-Pakistani relations and the planned meeting in Russia on June 2 between foreign ministers of China, India and Russia.

    The Indian president will visit the design bureau of the Sukhoi military aircraft builders, and Mashinostroyeniye, the Russian manufacturer of the joint project to build the anti-ship missile BrahMos, which both countries plan to export.

    Russia is the largest arms supplier to India, accounting for 70 percent of India's weapons imports.
