BEIJING, May 18 -- In Uzbekistan, the government says
troops did not kill any civilians in last weekend's unrest in the eastern town
of Andijan. Prosecutor-General Rashid Kadyrov delivered this message at a news
conference in the capital, Tashkent.
Kadyrov says 169 people were killed, including three
women, two children and 37 troops.
At the same briefing, President Islam Karimov blamed
alleged Islamic militants for the unrest. He asked journalists if they could
really believe that people who stormed a prison and a government building were
peaceful protestors.
Opposition figures are blaming government forces for
most of the killings. An Uzbek opposition party says it has compiled a list of
745 people killed.
