Musharraf to remain Pakistani president after 2007

    ISLAMABAD, May 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Pakistani Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid Ahmed Tuesday said President Pervez Musharraf will remain president after the 2007 general elections, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan.

    Talking to reporters in Lahore, capital of eastern Punjab province, Rashid said Musharraf is an elected president as he has been elected by the parliament.

    He further explained that if the parliament votes for him for the next term he (Musharraf) will remain president.

    Rashid hoped Musharraf would be candidate for presidentship after 2007 and that "hopefully he will be elected president."

    He said Pakistan has made record progress during the tenure of Musharraf and that during this period record economic progress and development have taken place in the country. Enditem
