KHARTOUM, May 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Sudanese Foreign Minister MustafaOthman Ismail said on Tuesday that the next round of peace talks with Darfur rebels in the Nigerian capital of Abuja should be final.
Ismail made the statement shortly after a six-way
African summit on Darfur wrapped up in the Libyan capital of Tripoli which
decided to start a new round of talks between Darfur rebels and the Sudanese
government in Abuja on June 1.
Ismail also called for holding a high-level
conference of all parties concerned by the end of the peace talks so as to reach
a comprehensive solution to the Darfur crisis.
Leaders of Egypt, Libya, Nigeria, Sudan, Eritrea
and Chad reviewed the situation in Darfur, saying the conflict should be
resolved within the framework of the African Union. Two main Darfur rebel groups
-- the Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement have
chosen to stay away from the summit.
Clashes flared up in Darfur in February 2003 when
local farmers took up arms against the government, accusing it of neglecting the
barren area. Many people have been killed and more displaced in the violence.
