Cyprus protests to US over delegation's visit to north

NICOSIA, May 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The Cyprus government on Saturday made strong representations to the United States on plans by US congressmen to visit the country's northern Turkish controlled areas.

Permanent Secretary of the Cyprus Foreign Ministry Ambassador Sotos Zakheos summoned charge d'affaires of the US Embassy Ed Nolan, saying such a behavior violates UN resolutions and provokes ill feeling among the Cypriots.

Zakheos asked US congressmen to review their decision to enter Cyprus through an illegal port of entry, saying they should use ports or airports in the southern government-controlled part of theisland.

Democrat congressman from Florida Robert Wexler announced earlier in the week that a congressional delegation will be visiting Turkey on June 1 and will afterwards travel to northern Cyprus through "Ercan" airport.

Zakheos said this kind of visit violates UN Security Council resolutions and provokes public sentiment of the people of Cyprus.

It is "unacceptable to sacrifice international law and small states for the sake of political expediency," he said.

"No government or state official of the Republic will receive the US congress delegation if it arrives through the occupied areas, in violation of Security Council resolutions and the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus," Zakheos said.

Cyprus has been divided since Turkish troops took control of thenorthern third of the island in 1974. Since then, the Cyprus government has declared all airports and ports in northern Cyprus illegal ports of entry. Enditem
