UK condemns violence in Uzbekistan

    LONDON, May 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Britain on Saturday condemns the violence in Uzbekistan, and urged the Uzbek authorities to resolveit in peacefully.

    "I am extremely concerned by reports that Uzbek troops opened fire on demonstrators in Andijan. I urge the Uzbek authorities to show restraint in dealing with the situation and look for a way toresolve it peacefully." the Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said.

    Thousands of armed protesters turned the eastern Uzbek city of Andijan into chaos, setting free prisoners from a prison and engaging in clashes with security forces.

    At least nine people were reportedly killed and 34 others injured in armed clashes on Friday following violent demonstrations in the eastern Uzbekistan city of Andijan. Enditem
