12 rebels killed in operation in eastern Afghanistan

    KABUL, May 9 (Xinhuanet) -- About twelve rebels were killed in eastern Afghanistan when US Marines tracked down a group of insurgents there, coalition said on Monday.

    It is said that warplanes also joined the fight with the insurgents on Sunday evening in Laghman, a province of an eastern opium-producing region where US forces have regularly fought with militants.

    Two US Marines were also killed on May 8 northwest of Jalalabad,in Laghman Province, in an engagement with approximately 25 insurgents. The Marines had intelligence that insurgents were in the region and sought out the insurgent location. The Marines located the insurgents and an engagement ensued.

    The names of the dead are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. Enditem
