Palestinian municipal elections result expected on Monday

RAMALLAH, May 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Final official results of the second stage of the Palestinian municipal elections will be announced on Monday, a senior electoral official said Sunday.

Firas Yaghi, executive director of the highest committee for local elections, told Palestinian Radio that the committee will hold a news conference in Ramallah on Monday to announce the final results.

"The committee needs more time to put all results into the computers in order to get more accurate results," Yaghi told the radio.

The elections were held on Thursday in 84 towns and villages in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem.

Initial results showed the mainstream Fatah movement won about 56 percent of the contested council seats, followed by the radical Islamic Resistance group Hamas with 33 percent.

Hamas outperformed Fatah led by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in the first stage of municipal elections in January. Enditem
