Teresa Teng -- "pop music classic" singer in heart of Chinese worldwide

    HONG KONG, May 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Ten years have pasted since TeresaTeng died from a severe asthma attack in Chieng Mai of Thailand, but her pleasant songs and sweet appearance have been remembered by millions of Chinese all over the world.

    The heavy rainy Sunday here is the 10th anniversary of Teng's death, media and fans here arranged various programs and activities to commemorate so far the famous Chinese singer, who ispopular in Chinese societies worldwide for three decades.

    The Hong Kong-based Phoenix Television, presented to its audience worldwide a five-episode TV series from Monday to Friday to commemorate the diva who passed away at the age of 42.

    The TV series, titled "When Will You Come Back Again (one of her song's name) -- In memory 10th anniversary of Teresa Teng's Death," tells of a life story of Teresa Teng. The stories told by her brothers, friends, teachers, musicians, fans and some other Teng related personnel, with a number of most popular songs of Teresa.

    Starting with one of her most popular song "Your Sweet Smiles, "the 150-minute TV series tells many stories of Teresa, and gives most emotional touches to the singer beloved by Chinese fans all over the world.

    "Her songs express the most beautiful musical notes of the Chinese culture," commented by Tiger Hoo, host of the TV series, in an interview with Xinhua.

    Hoo said, Teresa's songs are popular in many places. When he made TV programs in the Chinese mainland cities, Teresa's songs can often be heard in hotels and taxies. When he went to Chieng Mai to cover the death of Teng in 1995 and said "who knows Teresa Teng?" at the airport. Nearly all the taxi drivers replied him by shouting "Yes, I know" and he easily arrived at the Imperial Hotelwhere she once resided.

    Jia Ding, a famous musician of the Chinese mainland, described Teresa's songs as the classics of the popular songs, as her CDs are side by side with CDs of many classic musicians.

    In Hong Kong, Teresa's CDs are sold in nearly every music storefrom chain stores as HMV to small roadside stores.

    The TVB (Television Broadcasting Ltd), also aired a special program title "Citywide Remembrance of Teresa Teng" Saturday to recall her days and performances given in Hong Kong, mostly in early 1990s.

    Madame Tussauds Hong Kong has joined hands wit Teresa Teng Foundation to launch a mini-exhibition titled "Thinking of Our Dear Teresa." The mini-exhibition will last until July 31, 2005.

    Teresa Teng's figure in Madame Tussauds is dressed up with a black midi with a dragon pattern in a long-tail hairstyle. The mini-exhibition features the 1985 NHK concert video, four beautiful costumes that were once worn by Teresa on the stage and five trophies awarded in Japan between 1974 and 1988, demonstrating her outstanding music contributions.

    In addition, there are eight private photos of Teresa behind that stage, including memories of a fans club's gathering and holiday snaps.

    Kelly Mak, Marketing and Business Development at Madame Tussauds Hong Kong said "we would like to provide an opportunity for people who love Teresa to honor and capture once again her sweet voice and beautiful on-sage appearance.

    Jim Teng, CEO of Teresa Teng Foundation said at the opening of the mini-exhibition earlier this year that "every time I am back to Hong Kong and see the figure of my dear sister at Madame Tussuds of Hong Kong, my good memory flashes back instantly. "

    He said "during these 10 years, I always think of her and it means a lot to me. The mini-exhibition is part of a series of activities to mark the 10th anniversary of Teresa's death to honorher in a meaningful place."

    Hong Kong musicians will also stage a large music opera in June.Cao Zhong, an anchorwoman from TBV, who looks like Teresa Teng will cast the role of Teng and give a song of Teng in the opera.
