Russia, Georgia to keep holding talks on bases withdrawal

MOSCOW, May 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia expressed hope Thursday to complete the withdrawal of its military bases from Georgia as soon as possible, but said no deadline has been set for signing documents, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a telephone conversation with his Georgian counterpart Salome Zurabishvili that "Moscow isdetermined to reach agreements" as soon as possible on conditions that will be acceptable and suitable for both sides.

Russian Foreign Ministry sources said the two ministers agreed to continue their talks on Friday.

Itar-Tass quoted the ministry sources as saying the two ministers had discussed a possible joint statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Georgian counterpart Mikhail Saakashvili on major aspects in the mutual ties, particularly the issue of the bases' withdrawal.

After the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia has withdrawn two of its four military bases in Georgia. The withdrawal of the remaining two is under negotiation. Enditem
